Babinden – Day of Midwifery

Babinden, celebrated on January 8th (or January 21st in the old style), is one of the most fascinating and cherished traditional Bulgarian holidays. It is dedicated to midwives who, in the past, played a vital role in the lives of rural communities. This day is a tribute to their dedication and skills related to childbirth and child-rearing.

History and Symbolism of the Holiday

Babinden is an ancient holiday with roots in Slavic customs and traditions. In the past, midwives, also called “babas” (grannies), were the main helpers of women during childbirth. They not only provided physical assistance but were also keepers of rituals and beliefs that ensured health and fertility.

In 1951, Babinden was officially recognized as the Day of Midwifery in Bulgaria. This day honors both traditional midwives and modern medical professionals such as obstetricians, midwives, and nurses.

What Happens on Babinden?

On this day, celebrations begin with ritual acts symbolizing gratitude and blessings. Here is how the holiday unfolds:

  1. Bathing the Baby and Ritual Washing of Hands – Early in the morning, mothers with young children visit the midwife. They bring gifts such as soap, a towel, and water to wash her hands as a sign of respect. Then, the “baba” sprinkles water and offers blessings for health and fertility.

  2. Feast and Festivity – After the rituals, everyone gathers around a table laden with traditional dishes such as bread, roasted meat, banitsa, and red wine. The holiday is known for its cheerfulness, music, and dancing, which often continue until late.

  3. Gifts for the Midwife – The midwife receives gifts from the families she has helped as a token of gratitude. In the past, these gifts were handcrafted items or food, while today, symbolic souvenirs or flowers are often given.

  4. Fertility Rituals – In some parts of Bulgaria, a ritual involving the “ tying” and “ untying” of a belt is performed, symbolizing fertility and easy childbirth for future mothers.

Legends and Beliefs

According to folklore, midwives possessed special powers that allowed them to assist during childbirth and protect mothers and babies from evil forces. It was believed that the midwife served as a mediator between humans and the supernatural, which is why all rituals were performed with great reverence and care.

The Significance of Babinden Today

Today, Babinden is an occasion to express gratitude to professionals in the field of midwifery who help families welcome new life every day. The traditions are still observed in many Bulgarian villages, but the holiday has also taken on a modern meaning – respect for professionalism and humanity.
